Why would you put the oil filter so it mounts sideways?!

Next time break the filter loose with a filter wrench, then punch holes in it with a screwdriver to let the oil drain out into your pan. Mess averted.

On the Murano it's sideways and drains right onto the lower a arm. :face palm:

Its sideways on my dads A4 (b6), but drains without a problem, as long as you remember to unscrew and remove the smaller protective plate. Otherwise, youre f*cked as well...

Doesn’t that help to keep the canister from getting all slippery as you’re trying to spin it off?

On my 944 it’s upside down (as in the open end faces down) and only accessible from the top of the engine bay.

Enter the world of the Porsche 944, where the oil filter is - you guessed it - upside down.

Kinja'd!!!

You’d think that if you let the thing sit for an hour, all the oil would drain down, but it doesn’t.

On the SL600 Sport, it’s a cartridge filter. Not much of a mess, just pull it out with a shop rag underneath to prevent a mess.

Unlike the Japanese and Americans, the Germans learned long ago how to design oil filters that don’t make a mess.

It’s funny seeing posts on Oppo when they buy a new car and love the cartridge filters, and I just sit back and laugh because the Germans did that years ago.

Should have bought a German car, 99% of them make no mess at all, they’re awesome!

I use to have a Dodge Dakota with a engine oil drain plug in the pan that drained right on the cross member. It was nice having oil draining everywhere at the same time.

NA/NB Miatas have theirs located sideways...under the intake manifold...

Could be worse, the old shape Transit Connect had the oil filter mounted sideways on the back of the engine, up against the firewall.

It's only incorrect if the method doesn't work.

Same with some older Ferraris. Years ago I helped a pal change the oil on his 328GTS. The damn filter is mounted on the intake between the Vee, upside down. That was a mess.

I don’t know.. the goofy cartridge filters that Mazda uses are a pain in the buttox - I get oil down my arm every time I change it. It is interesting to learn that MBZ uses them on their top end motor.

That one is stupid, because American. But I think it has a drain on it, but every time I saw one, it was stripped. I don’t know what it is about mechanics that work on American and Japanese cars, and not German, but they always strip allen bolts. It irritates the shit out of me.

Mercedes uses cartridges on all of their motors, and BMW after the M50 only uses them. VAG switches, but when they’re spin on, they make zero mess.
